Arsenal stand a slim chance of signing Karim Benzema this summer, as Real Madrid are willing to let the Frenchman go if they receive an offer worth £45million.
The Daily Mail buck the trend of recent reports suggesting Arsene Wenger’s move for his compatriot was dead in the water, insisting that Los Blancos have not completely closed the door on a potential sale.
RECORD-BREAKING CLAIM
The newspaper states that Arsenal would have to break their club record in terms of fee paid for a player if they want to land the Real man, but that said transfer is feasible if the Gunners consent
Though there’s obviously plenty of stumbling blocks that might arise even if Wenger says yes to paying the aforementioned sum, north London fans might derive some hope from the fact that their club has spent big on the likes of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez over the course of the past two summer windows.
Indeed the deal that took Ozil to the Emirates Stadium was just shy of the £45m mark at £42.5m, and since Arsenal haven’t splurged in the market this year - aside from the £10m purchase of Petr Cech - they might have such money to play with.
ARSENAL'S NEED
If that’s the case then Gunners fans will certainly hope that Wenger will push for Benzema, as Arsenal look to be lacking a natural goalscorer who can find the net 20 times or more in the Premier League this season.
Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott are the two seemingly fighting for Wenger’s favour up top, but neither has a track record of hitting the figure it usually takes to lead a team to the English title. Benzema, however, does.
REAL'S STANCE ON THE MATTER
What’s more it’s believed that there could be factors in Madrid that play into Arsenal’s hands. There are still those at the Santiago Bernabeu who want Rafael Benitez to try his hand at signing Marco Reus, and if Benzema leaves it could free up room for fan favourite Isco to land a permanent place in the starting XI.
Naturally with such potential deals there are plenty of reasons to be sceptical, but with La Liga not kicking off until August 23 Real would have time to consolidate their squad even if Benzema is sold, so time isn’t particularly of the essence.
